The English Curriculm

Assessment

The English Department carry out regular assessments on pupils in both key stages in speaking and listening, reading and writing. End of half termly writing assessments are carried out throughout Key Stage 3, and each assessment is designed to teach the students a new writing skill. Further assessment opportunities are incorporated into each scheme of work.  In addition, the Department use the DCSF recommended system of APP (Assessing Pupils’ Progress) to perform further assessment at timetabled intervals throughout the year.

At Key Stage 4, assessments are mainly made through coursework in Year 10 and then scheduled formal exam practises in Year 11. Assessment throughout Key Stage 3 and 4 helps to inform our teaching and to identify any students who might be underachieving. The Department assess against the National Curriculum Level Descriptors at Key Stage 3 and the AQA grading system at Key Stage 4.
