Mr Jonathan Byrne, PhD

Interventional Cardiologist

I completed my undergraduate medical training in Bristol and then continued general professional medical training in the South-East of England and London. I then undertook a PhD in the academic department of Cardiology at King’s College Hospital examining molecular mechanisms underlying left ventricular hypertrophy. Following completion I undertook my Specialist training in Cardiology on the South Thames rotation. My training in interventional cardiology was undertaken at King’s College Hospital from 2004, and continued on Vancouver Island as a Boston sceintific sponsored Interventional Fellow. Following my return to the UK in 2007 I completed my training in interventional cardiology, along with transoesophageal echocardiography and cardiac CT scanning. Since my appointment as a consultant in July 2008 I have also been involved in the development of the structural programme at Kings College Hospital, with the use of novel percutaneous techniques to treat aortic and mitral valve disease.

I am an interventional cardiologist who specialises in the treatment of coronary artery disease, and management of cardiovascular risk. This involves the treatment of patients with angina, heart failure, heart rhythm disturbances and high blood pressure. I also treat patients with valvular heart disease with new treatments which do not require an operation, such as TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) and Mitraclip (percutaneous treatment of the mitral valve). I also perform a number of imaging tests for the heart including transoesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography along with CT coronary angiography.
